Travel guides: inside Taiwan and the routes out of it

Trips from Taiwan fall into two groups: rail-linked itineraries along the island, and regional or long-haul flights out of Taoyuan, Songshan, Taichung and Kaohsiung. They are planned in completely different ways.

Inside Taiwan: build the itinerary around the railway

The western corridor is served by a complete north–south spine of high-speed and conventional rail. Taipei to Kaohsiung Zuoying takes about ninety minutes at best, which makes 'base yourself in one city and day-trip to others' a genuinely practical strategy. That matters most on short trips: you can cover Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung without changing hotel every night.

The east coast — Yilan, Hualien and Taitung — depends on the Taiwan Railway east line, where frequencies are lower and long-weekend tickets often sell out shortly after release. If your plan includes the east, secure train tickets before booking accommodation; doing it the other way round frequently leaves the two out of sync. Taroko Gorge, the Qingshui Cliffs and the East Rift Valley generally need a hired car or driver, as public coverage is limited.

Seasonally, March to May and October to November are the most comfortable months, with moderate temperatures and less rain. June to September brings heat and typhoons, so mountain plans need close weather monitoring. December to February is damp and cool in the north — exactly the right season for the Beitou, Jiaoxi and Zhiben hot springs — while the south stays dry and sunny, which suits outdoor time in Tainan and Kaohsiung.

Four route groups out of Taiwan

Grouped by flight time and planning difficulty, to help you size the trip.

Japan (2.5–4 hours)

Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Okinawa dominate, with dense frequencies and real competition. Cherry blossom in April and autumn colour in November require booking far ahead.

Korea (about 2.5 hours)

Seoul Incheon and Busan, plus Songshan–Gimpo straight into central Seoul, which suits short trips. Complete the required electronic entry formalities first.

Southeast Asia (3–5 hours)

Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Manila. Plenty of low-cost options, so compare on totals, and note the differing rainy seasons.

Long-haul (10–14 hours)

The North American west coast, major European cities and Oceania. Plan three to six months ahead and compare non-stop against connecting via an Asian hub on total cost.

Preparing for an international trip

  • Confirm at least six months of passport validity beyond your return, allowing time for renewal.
  • Check the destination's electronic entry system; most now require an online declaration before arrival.
  • Consider travel and trip-disruption insurance — long-haul and connecting itineraries carry higher delay risk.
  • Prepare local payment methods; some countries remain cash-first and others are almost entirely cashless.
  • Download offline maps and transport apps, as connectivity on arrival is not guaranteed.
  • Save your accommodation address in the local script for taxis and public transport enquiries.
